Meaghen McCord // The South African Shark Conservancy

Meaghen McCord born in Canada and has resided in Hermanus for 11 years. She has a Masters Degree in Fishery Science. The South African Shark Conservancy is a non-profit company founded by Meaghan McCord in 2007. SASC is promoting the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources through research, education and awareness.

SASC specializes in consulting on matters such as fisheries management, marine bio-diversity conservation, resource management and development, as well as capacity building, impact assessments and education. Based at the Old Harbour near the Market Square.


Is this your dream job?

Absolutely, luckily got to start SASC; would not do anything else. Rewards come in a different form.

Your love for the ocean started, where, when and why?

I grew up in central Canada; heard the word Marine Biology and at the age of 5-6 years old desperately wanted to study sharks. We grew up without electricity, nothing to do other than read.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Nothing that is good!!, mmmm …. ‘can drink a fisherman under the table!’, I can hold my brandy. – A trooper on land and sea

What did you think you would be when you were growing up?

A marine Biologist and a Writer; ‘dream of being a Fiction Writer!’.

What is your favourite music?

Anything!’, If it makes me move; i love it!”. – Of Monsters and Men or The Rolling Stones

If you were a tree or an animal, what kind of tree or animal would you be?

A tree: definitely an old growth California Redwood, an animal: a polar bear.

What did you eat for breakfast this morning?

Yoghurt, nuts and berries – ‘banting!’, ‘hehe!'”.

What would you wish for the world in general?

Peace, the end of child abuse… ‘A lot really!'”

What book did you last read?

Penny Marshall’s in a league of her own “My Mother Was Nuts” – ‘She is crazy!’, ‘typical for LA!’.

What profession other than your current one would you like to attempt?

A Physicist to go to space!’ – An Astronaut

How about ‘ do you have a strange talent not many know of? – those can be pretty funny and sometimes interesting?, keen to divulge? 🙂

Do you eat Seafood?

Yes, not regularly; and only if it is sustainable.

Have you traveled and where?

Yes not as much as i would like; Tanzania, Zim, States and Canada walked 7000km from coast to coast. UK, Spain, & Germany – well traveled

What is your dream travel destination?

Antarctica is the top of my bucket list including Iceland, Norway and Russia too.

Where is your favourite place in the world?

Kei Mouth – ” where we had the best chilli sauce on the planet!”……..
